A MAN who beat tongue cancer is appealing for smokers to quit and put the money they save to good use.
Since his recovery, John McVey set himself the challenge of raising a massive £25,000 for Cancer Research UK.
John, diagnosed with tongue cancer in September 2005, is pre-paring for a gruelling trek through Peru in May to boost funds and has devoted much of his time to organising as many money-spinning events as he can.
The fundraising is off to a flying start, with John gathering more than £2,500 so far.

His latest initiative stemmed from the generous gesture of a lady who was so moved by his story she gave up smoking for her New Year's resolution and donated the money she saves to John's fundraising appeal.
John was touched by the idea, and thought it was a fantastic way to raise much-needed cash for Cancer Research, while improving people's health.
John, 43, from Rhosesmor, said: `It sounded like such a good idea, and I'm really hoping others will take up this challenge and make quitting smoking their new year resolution.

'So far he has held a prize bingo, a car treasure hunt, a Christmas fair, and with the help of volun¬teers, bag packing sessions at Asda and Tesco.
He said: 'I have been amazed by people's generosity and support. I'd like to say a big `thank you' to all the businesses who donated prizes, the Springfield Hotel, the fabulous lads who helped me with the bag pack and to everyone who has supported me.'.
John, a director of Global Lift Equipment in Flint, is not resting yet. Along with his gruelling training for the trek, he is still busy planning other fundraising events. |
There will be a murder mystery night on the March 1, at the Springfield Hotel in Pentre Halkyn and a Pink Ball is being held at the Springfield Hotel on March 17, with the proceeds being split between Cancer Research UK and Breast Cancer.
